Theatres
Theatres, like most of the hospital, are staffed with pre-dominantly part-time female staff
who have heavy domestic commitments. There is a national shortage of theatre staff and
this problem has been largely overcome in the Operating theatres in Swindon by the use of
individually negotiated flexible part-time contracts. The aim of these is to reduce to a
minimum the conflict many nurses experience between home and work. In addition there
has been a policy of dual skilling, so that the service is not suspended because of lack of
skills in any one area. The Operating Theatres also participated in the development of
Level 2 Operating Department Competencies with the National Executive Training
Department and will shortly be introducing formal training for Theatre Support Workers.
